House construction method in Cyprus

The house construction method in Cyprus is called gravity designed reinforced concrete frame building with unreinforced masonry infill walls.

Most houses are constructed with a reinforced concrete skeleton to provide protection against earthquakes with mandatory earthquake specifications – foundations designed in strict accordance with detailed geo-technical land survey.

The civil engineer calculates the amount of steel and reinforced concrete needed for the skeleton and also the exact specifications such as the diameter of the steel and the locations of concrete pillars within the building. The outside walls are mostly filled in with terracotta bricks with air gaps. Both the inside and outside surfaces are rendered with cement “plastering”, to provide a finish suitable for painting.

Certificates of Approval and Building Permits - Paphos District, Cyprus

Both of these vital documents are issued after Planning Permission has been given.

In the case of a Building Permit you need this before you start building.

In the case of a Certificate of Approval you need this after the building has been fully completed to certify that Planning Permission has been fully complied with.  You need this to obtain your title deeds or add a property to land only title deeds.

In both cases they can only be applied for by a registered architect.

And in the Paphos District these are now issued by the local municipal office ie., Chlorakas, Peyia etc.,
