Cyprus Property Action Group (CPAG)
Cyprus Property Pressure Group

April 12, 2007 saw the formation of a Cyprus Property Pressure Group in Peyia in the Paphos Region of Cyprus.
The basic aims of this pressure group are:
• To represent the current views and difficulties of foreign purchasers in Cyprus and to actively seek Government support in this regard.
• To work with the Government and various industry bodies and professions to improve the current planning, construction and ownership laws, practices and enforcement in order to ensure a more protective environment for purchasers.

Background
The village of Peyia has proved to be particularly popular with UK ex-pats and much development continues to take place to satisfy the increasing demand for retirement and holiday homes, it is also an excellent location for investment properties.
Peyia covers a land area that is bigger than most municipalities in Cyprus . The traditional hillside village of Peyia lies just 19km nortwest of Pafos over looking banana plantations, vineyards and hundreds of fields with olive and orange trees. As a testament to the area’s mild climate all year around. Peyia is the only area in Cyprus where bananas grow.
Peyia boasts one of the highest populations of expatriates per capita on the island. The real estate boom in the Coral Bay region has accelerated the incoming tide of EU nationals, mostly British. EU expats there number 20 per cent of the electorate so are a force to be reckoned with.
The voting issue brought to a head a groundswell of opinion which centred on, among other things, the seemingly uncontrolled development of Pegeia, water shortages, flooding in heavy rain and a perceived general flouting of building regulations by developers.
The EU expat community won the right to vote in local elections the EU Expat Community and the next step in the right direction was the election of an independent Mayor in a by election.
Then came the formation of the Peyia Community Association. Here is a taste of what it stands for.
“A spokeswoman cited the construction of 7,000 villas in the immediate Peyia surroundings in the last few years as an example of how Peyia has been carelessly over-developed, adding there were many EU nationals who felt as she did about this issue and wanted to be able to vote for candidates, as they are entitled to do by law, who shared their positions.”
“This is a big issue that covers unsuitable and dangerous building practices, lack of title deeds, consumer protection, town planning laws, environmental and aesthetic concerns and public safety. We are concerned that this has been allowed to happen in Peyia, which has now become a perfect model for ‘how not to do it’.
The Peyia Coalition of Independents was formed but the Peyia Community Association remained fiercely non political. In 2006 a representative of The Peyia Coalition of Independents was elected to the local council.
