Cyprus Tourism – Sterling vs Euro – What real people are saying

Paphos Harbour, CyprusThere have been articles in the press recently about the effect that the fall in sterling has had on those who have chosen to emigrate to Cyprus especially where they are getting income in sterling and living in euros. The 30% fall in value has caused belts to be tightened and in some cases real hardship. The Editor has a friend who still works for a Cyprus based estate agent and the comments are “they just drive by on the way to the airport leaving the keys to the house just saying rent it out for what you can or sell it !!”  From the volume of whole house contents sales in the classifieds this report is born out too well.  So what are real people saying about the prospects for Cyprus tourism this year.  Here are just a few snippets.  You soon get the flavour which is not too hard to guess and some examples of why.

reduction in tourism due to the economic downturn

Weekly costs of £1100+ for a 3 bed villa appear to be the norm

Surely, in the current climate Villa owners would review their prices. Apparently not! Alongside empty hotel rooms

I have not raised my prices since last year

if you think the Villa is so grossly overpriced make them an offer

Word of the moment is “haggle”

Flights have gone up, be it stealthily by also charging for baggage, traveling together etc. Food and drink has rocketed

had quite a few enquiries this year as well because we did not put the price up because of the financial climate – flights – the effect the euro has on holidays

The reality is that € 17.95 is really just £10 [ cypriot ] it is Sterling that is making the prices appear so high

but this amount equates to £15 in sterling

Cyprus has priced itself out of the market. Tourists are being ripped off with the high prices of food and entertainment and are unlikely to venture far from the harbour and touristy places where prices are cheaper

everyone I know are going to Turkey, Egypt or Tunisia at the moment, with the odd few off to Dubai. The cash goes further and the holiday costs less

the last two enquiries we have had, pulled out of booking and stated it was because of expensive flights.

Air fares have gone up considerably in the last year, and as these are in GBP no-one can blame the weak pound against the euro.

always booked the flights first when prices are attractive, this is usually the biggest variable cost.

Thing is tho last year our rental worked out at £390.00 per month , this year same price is going to cost us £440.00

Cyprus expensive is that it is STERLING that has collapsed. The currency here is the Euro, and for the most part prices have undergone only modest increases or none at all.
