It is has been said that all legal firms and individuals practising in Cyprus are made to sign an agreement that they will never act for a client to take legal action against another lawyer before being allowed to practise.  I can’t confirm or deny that and I can’t see any lawyer agreeing that this is the case for fairly obvious reasons.

What I can say is that I have come across this and this was explained to me face to face by a lawyer.

The advice of a lawyer was not go to Court against another lawyer in Cyprus until his clients had made a complaint to the Attorney General acting as President of the Disciplinary Board. The Disciplinary Board then investigates and if the lawyer is found against then you can go to Court. But then again you are best advised, if there are then criminal charges then to be brought, then best wait again until this action has been completed. But by then what chance is there of any financial restitution?  Very little.

The advice is choose your lawyer as carefully as the property you wish to buy and obtain written declarations of independence from the developer and anyone in any family connection.

This article was not written by a lawyer and it does not intend to constitute legal advice.
