Paphos lawyer – brushes with the Law
Cyprus Mail article
A FEMALE lawyer has been sentenced to 30 days in Cyprus state prison, after being found guilty of traffic violations by Paphos court on Tuesday.
The lawyer was found guilty of three traffic offences, and has a string of traffic convictions in her past.
Jittery Paphos lawyers, shocked that one of their own could be sentenced to serve a prison term, were disbelieving of the outcome.
“I shouldn’t be speaking to the press,” said one lawyer, “please don’t print my name. I can’t believe she is going to prison. It’s ridiculous, she is a lawyer,” he said.
When asked if he thought lawyers were above the law he replied, “I am making no comment.”
The suspect attended court on Tuesday to answer charges of speeding, driving without a licence or valid insurance. She had previously surrendered her licence, after being found guilty of other driving offences, and was banned from driving.
The court sentenced her to 30 days in prison for driving while banned, and a further 15 days for speeding and driving without valid insurance. These terms are to run concurrently.
The lawyer was taken directly from the court and transferred to the central prison in Nicosia.
The lawyers of Paphos stated they were taking steps to appeal to President Demetris Christofias for clemency, with the hope he will grant her a pardon and release her from prison.
Ioannis Papazacharia, the President of the lawyers of Paphos, refused to comment on the case.
This is the first time in Cyprus that lawyer and specifically a woman is jailed following a court decision on traffic violation offences.
