Periodic Dust Storms in Cyprus
Periodic Dust Storms in Cyprus

Several times a year Cyprus homeowners and gardeners suffer some warm wind gales which come from Africa and pick up fine dust and sand from the Sahara.
Sometimes the gusts at the height of the storm large satellite dishes are moved off tune – costing a visit from your satellite installer.
Unfortunately these are somtimes quite destructive stripping all the leaves off trees and shrubs – but they do recover !! But the deposit of fine dust and sand is a chore to clean away. And you cannot hose it away now because of water use restrictions unless you want a fine of CYP50 !!

On October 19, 2002, a satellite captured this image of a large billowing dust storm moving west from the Middle Eastern countries of (clockwise from top) southern Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Israel, out into the Mediterranean Sea, and over the island of Cyprus. The dust storm stretched about 200 miles out into the Mediterranean, and it appears to be about 400 miles across from north to south.
These are often referred to as Coptic Storms. This Information has been provided as a public service by Mr.Andres Pistentis, Chief Fisheries Officer.
The “Coptic Chart” is named after one of the ancient religions and was devised many years ago in Alexandria (Egypt).
Some say it is superstition and mumbo jumbo but, surprisingly, the chart is fairly accurate and rains usually begin 72 hours, either before or after the given date.
The gales usually set in from south-west and veer to the west and north west and last an average of 3 days. The storms rarely deviate more than 48 hours from dates.
